The question is....The Clarke family went sailing on a lake. Their boat averaged 6 kilometers per hour. The Rourke family took their outboard runabout for a trip on the lake for the same amount of time. Their boat averaged 14 kilometers per hour. The Rourke family traveled 20 kilometers farther than the Clarke family. How many hours did each family spend on their boat trip?

I would start by saying (rate)(time)= Distance and what do you know about these two sailing trips.... and the distance of these two families.....?

I know that the Clarke families boat averages 6 kilometers per hour. And the Rourke families boat averages 14 kilometers per hour and they went 20 kilometers farther then the Clarke family.

okay clarke family distance = 6t rourke family distance = 14t and we know that t is the same amount of time for each family..... but the only thing that is different is the distance they travel.....so clarke family distance + 20 = Rourke family distance.....okay?

so 6t + 20 is clarke family distance plus the 20 extra km to make it equal to the rourke family distance...now we have an equation 6t+20=14t solve for t
