    I don't understand the question exactly: Do we have all 26 alphabets to play with or can we only use 4 alphbets? Let's assume the question is rephrased as: How many 4 letter combinations can you make using the english alphabet. (assuming that repeating the alphabets is allowed) To solve this question, let's take the 4-letter word position-by-position: So, in the first position, we can fit 26 possible choices. In the second position, we can fit 26 choices again since repetition is allowed. Similarly for the 3rd and 4th positions, we have 26 choices. Hence, the answer is 26*26*26*26.
