If a golfers score of 4 under par is represented by 4 , Then how would a golfers score of 4 over par best be represented?

    If 4 under par was represented by 4 then that would mean that the par score would have to be 8. 4 over par would be 12.

    I think 4 = under par, 0 = par, and -4 = over par would be the best representation.

    but golf is typically scored with the lowest score being better. I was figuring that the 4 stood for the number of strokes taken to get the ball in the hole.
