This weekend 13 athletes on the track-and-field team are competing in the hurdles event at a regional track meet. How many different ways can the athletes place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd?

    3 athletes are to be chosen from 13 and order matters, so we use permutations. 13P3 = 13!/(13-3)! = 1716 ways
