    \[x^2-5x+6=24\] \[=x^2-5x-18=0\] \[D=(-5)^2-4(1)(-18)=25+72=97\] \[So x=(5+\sqrt{97})/2 or x=(5-\sqrt{97})/2\]

    No, that's not the way. You have to give that function to the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0

    (x-3)(x+2) = 24 <=> x^2 - 5x - 18 = 0

    so the eqn becomes x^2-x-30=0 so, (x-6)(x+5)=0 =x = -5 or x=6
