Let w=(4x^2 - 9). Replace each occurrence of (4x^2 - 9) in the original equation with the symbol w. w^2-11w+24 = 0 Solve for w. w=3 and w=8 Now solve each of the two quadratic equations 3=(4x^2 - 9) and 8=(4x^2 - 9) for x. You should have four solutions, two for the first equation and two for the second one. One of the four solutions is ( sqrt(17) )/2 . You should be able to find the other 3.
