square both sides: (sqrt(x+12)) ^2 = x^2 x+12= x^2 x^2 -x -12 = 0 (x-4) (x+3) x maybe equal to 4 or -3

double check to see if they both fit the bill: sqrt(4+12) = 4 sqrt(16) = 4 4 = 4 ... 4 is good. sqrt(-3+1) = -3 thats just silly, you can get a negative number when you square...unless......you have to use your imagination :)
