You need the molar mass in order to convert. Say, for example, you have 1 kg of carbon. The molar mass of carbon is about 12g/mol, so the number of moles in 1kg would be$1kg \times \frac{1 mol}{12g} \times \frac{1000g}{kg}=\frac{1000}{12}mol$notice how the units cancel?
