    2*2*2 = 8. I made this 8 positive since the -2 was in brackets. I then took 8 - (3) which is 11.

Alright, if your number or variable has an odd power = takes the sign of the variable in the brackets . If your number or variable has an even power = answer always positive. and you must know the following rules: (-)(-) = + (-)(+) = - (+)(+) = + Give it a try now ^_^

-8 - (-3) = -5. I think where my confusion lies is I thought if you have negative squares, the answer is positive if the base is in parentheses and negative if it is not. But as I type this, I am thinking that ONLY applies to squares and not all exponents?

a square is an "even" exponent; and all even exponents give you a positive result.

    1 is an odd number: -3^1 = -3 3^1 = 3 2 is an even number: -3^2=9 3^2=9
