I have been looking over this page, and it seems like it is the same course, but updated: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-189-a-gentle-introduction-to-programming-using-python-january-iap-2010/index.htm Yet this course seems to be the one with an active message board. Are they basically the same course? Why doesn't the other one have a message board?

This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.
