    you can use the quadratic equation to solve for both of them by subtracting 14 from both sides. the two terms come from the positive or negative that could be under the square root in the quadratic equation

    It might help to make a small graph and follow along how many times it passes the x axis. If you know the quadratic formula, however, you can find the answer by plugging in the unknowns.
