in a solar cell (PVC, for example) the sunlight directly causes release of electrons from the silicon in the cell, leading to generation of electric current. in a photosynthetic cell, light also causes the release of an electron, but this time from an organic compound called chlorophyll. This electron does not generate current but rather powers a transport chain that ultimately results in production of sugars and other nutrients for the plant. hope that helps.
