I see, the 2 is under the square root as well. So its sqrt(X+2) + sqrtx =4 square both sides so you get: x+2+2sqrt(x^2+2x)+x=16 simplify: sqrt(x^2+2x)=7-x square both sides: x^2+2x=49-14x+x^2 get all x's on one side: 16x=49 solve for x: x=49/16
