Do you remember long division? y into y^2 goes y, so subtract y(y - 4/36) = y^2 - 4y/36 from the first two terms of the dividend - that is y^2 - 16y/81 to get -7y/81. Bring down the next term of the dividend - that is +324. You are now going to divide the dividend by the divisor -7y/81 + 324, which goes -7/81, or (-7/81)(y - 4/36), which gives -7y/81plus (-4/36 times -7/81) which is +28/2916 Subtract this from -7y/81 plus 324 to get the number (324 - 28/2916) So, finally the division is (y - 7/81) remainder (324 - 28/2916)
