Suppose it take 3 days for a space vehicle to travel from Earth to the moon. About how long would it take the same vehicle traveling at the same speed to reach mercury? The moon is 240,000 away from earth and mercury is 57,000,000 away.

    First, figure out how many miles the spaceship travels in one day. Then divide 57,000,000 by that number and you'll have the answer. :)

    So would I take 240,000 and 57,000,000 and then divide by 2. I am not sure how to get that answer.

    x is to 57000k as 3 is to 240k x = 3(57000k)/240k

    so it takes 240k/3 days means we go 80k each day 80k 3 ----- 240k right?

    80k * number of days = 57000k? numbers of days = 57000k/80k

    It takes 3 days to travel 240,000 miles, so that means in ONE DAY the ship can travel 80,000 miles because: \[240,000 \div 3 = 80,000\] Now we want to know "How many 80,000 are in 57,000,000?" that's just \[57,000,000 \div 80,000 = 712.5\] So that means it takes 712.5 days for the ship to travel 57,000,000 miles. But if you're rounding up to the nearest day, it's 713 days. :) Hope this makes it a bit clearer.
