How did Constantine I impact the history of religion?

    He was perhaps the first Emperor to convert to Christianity. He eventually issued the Edict of Milan which declared religious tolerance. The important thing here is that this was all in the 300s AD and Constantine's rule extended far and wide.

    though, was his empire mainly christian? though I guess no evangelical in a sense

    Christianity was not very wide spread at this point, just 300 years after the Crucifixion. Before Constantine, Christians were often persecuted.
