      Multiplying the radical by its conjugate reduces the radical/imaginary number. (1 - i)(1 + i) [1 + i is the conjugate] ==> 1 - i² ==> 1 + 1 ==> 2 Source: 2 questions in yahoo answers exactly like yours http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110327182344AAibz1y&pa=FZB6NXXtFWMW0cLWwOob9gvVDmUMcMZjyeMtFrglb73kJ.9N2CQ-&paid=add_watch http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110327182425AA0d70v
