other than saying them to yourself a bunch of times and writing it down a bunch of times, i always try putting a picture with it or find a word i already know that is similair to it. you could also make the into a funny story so that you would remember it.

if you're a google chrome user try this : https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search?hl=en-US&q=word+of+the+day go down to the extension section and find the language you want then you'll get a different word everyday to practice.

It may sound boring or dumb, but reading an english to (whatever language you want to learn) can be really helpful. you'd be surprised what you retain!

Find someone from the same country and speak with them! I have always found with languages that being immersed in them really helps you not only learn the words, but also sentence structure, grammar and slang. So many words are found in phrase-books and things but are rarely used in common parlance. It also opens you to new friends and cultures which just reading a list on the internet doesn't give you.

It's good to try and learn a word or a phrase a day. That way, you can learn the basics of a language in not very much time. But you have to remember to repeat the words or phrases you learned other days, or you will forget them.

make a little "post-notes"< name tags, and apply them around the house: furniture, decorative items, house structures. Every time when you approach the word, read it loud and specifically think where did u picked up, what item/structure/etc... I put big white dry erase board over my bed and write whatever I need to memorize on it.

Another helpful way if you are not just learning idiom, is watching movies in a foreign language with english subtitles.
