Depends on who it is in American society you are referring to. For example in the state of Kentucky, the politicians supported the North for obvious political reasons, and the 'farmers' supported the South because the south at the time was Kentucky's main consumer of produced goods. As a whole America was split into three nations. North, South, and the disputed states (where social in-fighting was ripe).
