Well all you need to do is think about the function here. The distance is dependent on time so you can think of the function as d(t) = blah. We do know three things about the function 1) it is linear (I'm guessing it is based on question wording) 2) d(9.5) = 475 3) d(0) = 0 With this information you can figure out the slope (or speed) of the train. Recall that the slope of a function is considered the "rate of change" (ie speed) The slope is 475  0 / 9.5  0 = 50 recall, y1  y2 / x1  x2 and we have the points of (9.5, 475) and (0, 0) 50 miles per hour is the speed of your train so d(t) = 50t because every hour, t, the train travels 50 miles. d(4) = 50 * 4 = 200
