What should a mobile version of OpenStudy be able to do? What features should it absolutely have?

Hmm... It's tricky scaling down a modern, feature-rich, AJAX-driven site for a mobile version =) I would say a very basic, one group at a time view. Certainly no chat. I doubt most phones (except possibly iPhone and Android, but that limits the market a bit) would be able to handle the MathJax equation editor as it is now, but it's a pretty significant part of the site; mind you, I'm in the Mathematics, Phyiscs and Engineering groups, so I guess it's not significant to everyone! Because of how rapidly some of the groups move, Mathematics for instance, I'd say it be very difficult to be able to keep up on a mobile phone, given the obvious impedance of using a keypad vs a keyboard to navigate and communicate. But I digress, I would say that features it "should absolutely have" would be basic, just posting questions, browsing posted questions, and providing answers, with easy access to give medals and become fans. Joining and leaving groups probably wouldn't be essential on the mobile version, as this could be done on the computer, although others may disagree. I would envision something like Simple Login -> List of your groups, follow the linked title to any one -> See a list of active questions, newest to oldest as on the main site -> "Click" any question to view and provide answers -> Answers displayed similarly to on the main site, minus the AJAX aspects, with basic links etc instead.

limited Space on the mobile and complexity of the nature of creating an app exactly as the computer website certainly forces us to cut down on some points What i believe is we have to cut down the chat option. If we could create a two page interactive app , we could create one page which shows just the questions and another which shows the members online. Mainly we have to look at making it user friendly to ask and answer questions. That should be the sole aim of the app. As for chat many people would like to have it on their phone, so if it is possible can OS do something like FB does currently? I am thinking for more ideas currently

Openstudy should develop an app called Open study on the go!

Hmm. Obviously everyone would LIKE a chat feature, but is it really that essential that it must be accessible at all times, even when on the go?

Main things it should have in first version: (main and really important things) 1. Let ask questions 2. Let answer questions 3. Let change study groups For second version: (not the main features, but they are important) 1. Let us give medals 2. Let us fan others 3. Let us diference our questions from all the questions 4. Let us check our profiles 5. Give an achievement for login to the mobile version I dont recommend to add chat since it will be hard to implement and could make the site be slower.

Osans, what do you mean by change study groups? So if I ask a q in Math, I should then be able to go to CS?
Preetha
  • Preetha
That was awesome. So here is my list, summarizing from above: 1. Ask questions (Basic, no Eq Editor) 2. Answer questions 3. Change study groups 4. Show who is online 5. Give medals and become fans 6. Show answers - maybe links to site No Chat yet. Two page interface. Android FTW and iPhone Anyone wants to send me pictures? sketches of what it would look like?

Yay! I get all those emails on the phone. It would be nice if I can control some of that extra "emailage" if I'm able.

If you develope an app for openstudy for smartphones. the equation writer might be hard to manage but if you could hand write a note then take a picture of the equation and upload it to the thread you are trying to answer. I think that would work out pretty well. I have no idea how hard that would be to put in though.
