You can think of this as a two point problem: find the equation of a line, given 2 points. How? Think of years as the x-axis, and height as the y-axis. What are the points? at year 4, height is 9 (4,9) at year 8, height is 12 (8,12) now find h= mt+b (instead of y= mx+b) m will the be growth rate, and b will be the height of the tree when it was planted.
