    First, you need figure out how much money Nick gets from Penny. Since we know this amount is half of how much money Penny has, we know that Penny gave Nick half of $6.50. Half of $6.50 is 6.50/2, which is $3.25. So Penny gives NIck $3.25. Since Nick already has $1.00, he has in total $3.25+$1.00 = $4.25.
