why did eugene debs become a socialist?

    While Debs was in prison for his part in a labor protest, he read and was heavily influenced by Karl Marx and other writers. Debs became convinced that capitalism would be replaced by a cooperative system. Although he advocated radical reform, Debs was opposed to the revolutionary violence supported by some left-wing political groups.
