    The ancient Mayans were impressively advanced in a number of areas. They had measured the solar year to an amazing degree of accuracy, developed an extensive system of hieroglyphic writing, had a literate ruling class, and were extremely well versed in astronomy (observatories had even been built) with a number of surprisingly accurate observations. It's a lot more impressive when you consider that like their contemporaries, they only had the naked eye as their telescope. The Mayans had also developed their own system of mathematics and built great cities, pyramids, and even ball courts for their own unique sport. Their art was also well advanced with an understanding of the human form. They also had sophisticated techniques (such as terraces) used to cultivate fields to help feed their growing population.
