$3x^2 - x - 4 = 0$ multiply the coefficient of $x^2$ by the constant $3 \times -4 = -12$ find 2 factors of -12 that add to the coefficient of x, that is -1.... you should be able to get $3x^2 - x - 4 = (3x - 4)(x + 1)$
