What is the result if you divide -12x^8y^8 by 3x^4y^2?

    The constants (-12 and 3) just divide normally

    However, whenever you have the same variables being divided, you take the power of the one on top and subtract the power on bottom to get the final answer

    e.g. in your case, 8-4 = 4, and that is positive, and so the x stays in the numerator and retains that 4...no problem
