We have that \[ x + \sqrt{stuff} = 2 \] hence \[ \sqrt{stuff} = 2  x \] Now squaring we have \[ stuff = x^2  4x + 4 \] i.e., \[ 2 = x^2  4x + 4 \] i.e., \[ x^2  4x + 2 = 0 \] Now you'll get the answer you're looking for.
