    i would make a guess to start with \[x+\sqrt{\text{blah}}=2\] \[\sqrt{\text{blah}}=2-x\] square both sides and get \[x+\sqrt{\text{blah}}=4+2x-x^2\] \[2=4+2x-x^2\] and then solve the quadratic

    There's a sign error in what sat wrote above. We have that \[ x + \sqrt{stuff} = 2 \] hence \[ \sqrt{stuff} = 2 - x \] Now squaring we have \[ stuff = x^2 - 4x + 4 \] i.e., \[ 2 = x^2 - 4x + 4 \] i.e., \[ x^2 - 4x + 2 = 0 \] Now you'll get the answer you're looking for.
