That's a question of enormous scope, to which entire semester-long classes (not to mention whole series of courses) are devoted. Can you narrow it down a little to what you're having particular trouble with?
Yes, I am reading Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlow. I have to write an argument essay about 1000 words on the topic"who commands faustus or the devil''.In this play most of the time It was Devil who commands, not fastus.Needs to provide evidences from the text and also a good thesis statement.
Are you having difficulty getting started? Have you written an essay of this sort before, arguing a particular interpretation of a literary text? I read this play so very long ago, I cannot help you on particulars. I may be able to help you out with general process and strategies. So, it sounds as though you have a start point. You want to argue that it is the Devil who commands Faustus. Is this likely to be controversial, or very obvious? (As I said, I do not remember the play, and there are many versions of the Faustus story.) If it is likely to be very obvious, it is going to be more difficult to find a good thesis statement. The best thesis statements surprise us, leading us into an interpretation of the work that we had not expected. But whatever that thesis may be, you will have to eventually come to a more specific statement than simply, "In this play, the Devil commands Dr. Faustus." Have you got an assignment sheet you can post, so I (and anyone else who jumps in) can see exactly what your teacher is asking you to do?

Ok thank you Red wood for your help. Actually I have this question with specific quotation from the text like this. Act 1, scene 3, When Faustus had commanded Devil to come in the form of Franciscan Friar. I charge thee to return and change thy shape Thou art too ugly to attend on me Go,and return an old Franciscan Friar That holy shape becomes a devil Exit devil FAUSTUS talking to himself I see there's virtue in my heavenly words who would not be proficient in this art? how pliant is this Mephistophilis, Full of obedience and humility such is the force of magic and my spell Now, Faustus, thou art conjuror laureate, That canst command great Mephistophilis. Ok, these are the lines that has been quoted to prove who commands. I need to make a thesis statement from the above line arguing who leads who. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP.AS I SPENT MY MOST OF THE DAY THINKING ABOUT THE ANSWER. Thanks and regards.
Well, this is Faustus *thinking* he is in command. It proves nothing that the devil leaves and returns, as Faustus has required, in the shape of a friar. Is the devil doing this because he must? Or is he doing this as a ruse, to trick Faustus into thinking that he (Faustus) is in control? To lure him further into the trap, in other words. What really matter is what else happens in the play, and most particularly, how the play ends. Who triumphs in the end, and by what means? These lines you cite here have a context, and they must be considered in that context. Whether you argue for the one or the other, you must do so in context. If Faustus loses out in the end, you would argue something like this: although Faustus seems to be in control in this scene, given what happens (be specific) as the play develops, and given how it ends, he was clearly never in control. If the devil loses out in the end, you would argue something like this: although we cannot be sure whether the devil is doing Faustus' bidding or not in this scene, given what happens as the play unfolds (be specific) and how it ends, clearly we must conclude that Faustus really did command him in this scene. See what I mean? I am using the phrase "given what happens as the play unfolds and how it ends" as a sort of stand-in for something you would insert that is a lot more specific on those details. You would not necessarily use any part of that stand-in phrase, but that would be the focus of the evidence you are looking for.
Redwood, thank you very much. You have opened my mind .Now I am absolutely clear how to write such type of essay. You gave some great tips. I really appreciate you for your time. May God bless you! Now I am ready to start writing.
I'm so very glad! Have at then, and have fun. :)
