a2 is really not a good way to write it, because it really means a times 2 enough people do it here that I can guess what you mean, but it would be better to use the up-arrow.

the formula a^2 + b^2 = c^2 means take the two shortest legs, square them, and add together. Compare this to the square of the longest leg. Your calculator probably has a square button, but 84*84 gives the same answer
