The came from the days of DOS where con stands for the console. In a cmd window, you can create a file called "test" using copy con test first line ... last line ctrl-Z to end data entry. Similarly, you can do copy test con to display the file. So con is an inherited device name that you cannot use as a file name, unless it was changed in Windows 7. Home someone else has more information.
