    If you mean pre-Darwin, people may have had an idea about cross-breeding plants and animals for their best characteristics but otherwise evolution as such was not a meaningful concept. Post Darwin is when things changed and the concept was rather revolutionary. You may need to rethink your question to get a meaningful response.
