For the first one, the equation is correct, but the numbers are wrong. You're answer says they moved 3600 meters in 1 second. For the second one, gravity is 9.8 m/s. Look at the units in physics, it will help alot to determine what equation to use. |dw:1328841085631:dw|

Be careful in how you go from $$m \over hr$$ to $$m\over s$$. $s = {400 [\rm m] \over 4 [\rm hr]} \cdot \left [1 \rm hr \over 3600 \sec \right]$

Hey Nisa! Here is the first answer: Total distance climbed=400 meters Total time taken=4 hours. Now, you know that 1 hour = 60 minutes and 1 min = 60 seconds. So 1 hour = 60*60=3600 seconds. So 4 hours = 4*3600 seconds, Which is 14,400 seconds. So their average speed in m/s would be 400m/14,400seconds Or, calculating the speed, would be=0.027 m/sec Now since we are asked to round it off to the nearest hundredth, I think the final answer is, Average Speed= 0.027 rounds off to 0.030 since 0.0277 rounds to 0.0300 So final answer is 0.030 meter/second.

So your mistake I saw was that you divided seconds by meters which is wrong. You know that Speed=Distance/Time So Distance=400m and Time=14,400 Seconds So you should divide it this way 400/14400 and find the answer like I've done :) And now your second answer. Distance given=9000 meters. We have to find the Time. We know that, Speed=Distance/Time Or Speed*Time=Distance Or, Time=Distance/Speed. Since the speed is not given, we can take it as the gravity of the earth. Which is 9.8m/s^2 So, Time=9000/9.8 seconds. Which is 918.36 seconds. So they would have fallen for 918.36 seconds before finally drowning in the sea! xD
