The first pipe does 1/12 of the job per hour so in two hours it does 2/12 of the job The second pipe does 1/3 of the job per hour so in 2 hours, it does 2/3 of the job The third pipe does 1/x of the job per hour so in 2 hours, it does 2/x of the job. All three of them do ONE job in 2 hours so we need to add what each of them does in 2 hours and that total will be ONE job:

Ok, one more :) : Smith is in the process of reviewing salaries of his surveyors. During review he found that an experienced one can survey roadbed in 7 hours. A beginner needs 10 hours to survey same road. If they work together how long does it take them?

Surveyor 1 takes 7 hours to do the job so in 1 hour he does 1/7 of the job and in x hours, he does x/7 Surveyor 2 takes 10 hours to do the job so in 1 hour he does 1/10 and in x hours he does x/10. Together they do 1 entire job so:
