imperialism bring a lot of benefit to ones economy ( get a new country that has a large oil supply for example and now you can sell oil and make lots of $) . They also believed in social darwinism ( survival of the fittest: in this case the strongest country) and because they believed they were doing those countries a great service in helping industialize them and convert their people to more "appropriate" religions such as christianity.
