    subtract 5 from both sides |x| = 13 the are now 2 equations x = 13 and x = -13

We have |x|+5=18 |x| or Absolute Value function is defined as x for x>=0 -x for x<0 so here we have \[|x|+5=18\] or \[|x|=13\] or \[x=\pm 13\]
