lets say you have a cube of salt with a length of 2. It's surface area is equal to 24. Chop it into two pieces and you have two rectangles with surface area 16 each or a total of 32. As you can see the surface area increases with more divisions of the solid. Think of the number for surface area as the number of molecules reacting. Eventually if you chop it into enough pieces you would react all the individual molecules at the same time. When you increase surface area you are increasing the amount of solute that can react because it's not shielded underneath the other molecules.
