No it's not 28. You could also do like I've done in the picture above... save you needing to use some square roots...

1/2 Hypo of square a√ 2/2 = 14 => Side a = 28/√ 2 Area of Square = (28/√ 2 )² = 392 Area of circle: π r² = 196π => Area of shaded parts: 196π - 392 = 224
