Did you install and/or download anything...?

Well, every time you use something you could right click the icon and select "open with" then click "choose default program" and choose the program which would normally open your file. There will be a checkbox that says "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" make sure it's got a checkmark in it.

Sounds extremely tedious... Best bet would be to revert system to most recent restore point before incident...

Try the following: 1. Click Start | Run and type cmd, press Enter 2 Type the following 'regsvr32 /i %systemroot%\system32\shell32.dll'. You should get a message to the effect that the registration has succeeded. Also check you computer using an updated malware scanner. I would go for Malwarebytes. If the software finds any malware installed, repeat the process until a full scan returns no malware found. Hope this helps.

The easiest thing to do is reverting to last restore point. An assessment of what was done to your system can be determined by processes performed within that timeframe. Everything else takes more time than should be required, if the cause is undetermined. Process of elimination should be applied from stable OS environment. If the program uninstalled was the source of annoyance, than it appears to have modified your system settings; if not deleted something...
