Two important classes of catalysts are inorganic and biological catalysts. Another way of classifying them is as homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Homogeneous catalysts act in the same state (solid, liquid, or gas) as the reactants. Heterogeneous catalysts act in different state than the reactants.
When a biological catalyst combines with substrate molecules, an enzyme-substrate complex is produced. This complex is not stable. In this complex state the activation energy required to transform the substrate to a different product is lowered. As a result the substrate is chemically transformed to the end products. Without the presence of the catalyst it would take a very long time to convert the substrate molecules into the final products.
