one of my friend is doing a project in pervasive computing, he said that he started in java but later he said that he found VB with more functionalities. Can't we make it in java? i've heard that java is more powerfull. In which way VB might overtake it?

The only advantage of Visual Basic over Java that I can say is the .Net framework. For everything else (such as portability, run-time code, platform support etc) Java is way better.
