0k let x=number of $1 notes y=number of $5 notes x+5y =40 x=3y -------> replace this in the first equation 3y+5y=40 y=5 x=3y=15

one last thing, I thught because there were 3 times more £1 notes "x" then £5 notes "y" that 3x=y.
