You get a half circle that's the top half of x^2+y^2=25^2 which is a circle centered at the origin with a radius of 25.

Wait what? It just says to solve so I don't know what that means.

You can't solve an equation with two variables. That makes no sense at all. Are they asking you to solve for x?

I'll copy the exact question:

A tether is being attached to a 25-foot pole in such a way that x+y=50. By the Pythagorean theorem, the distance y=√(x^2+25^2). What must x be? Sorry if the x+y=50 affects the problem, I thought it was irrelevant.

Of course it effects the problem, lemme solve it now 0.o

unfornuately, I can't do the problem without a basic picture, because I have no idea what x and y are.

x+y=50, because that's given. also, x^2+25^2=y^2 in other words, x^2-y^2=25^2 which can be factored into (x-y)(x+y)=25^2 Because of difference of squares. Now, since x+y=50, subsitute to get (x-y)(50)=25^2 Now, we have a system of equations. x-y=25*25/50 x+y=50 Add first and second equation to get x+x-y+y=25*25/50+50 2x=25/2+50 x=125/4 Resubstitute to check my answer. I may have accidentally made a mistake.

OKay, I've been trying to comprehend this but wouldn't there still be an x and y?
