isnt youngest always at the top?
NotTim
  • NotTim
that good enough?
anonymous
  • anonymous
no it says oldest to youngest
anonymous
  • anonymous
oldest is first
NotTim
  • NotTim
so then you work from the bottom up, no? @TranceNova DONT LEAVE ME
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Lol, I thought you had this one :P okay, i'll look at the file

thanks
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Alright, I'm assuming there is nothing else to go with these questions? In geology we usually assume that the layer at the bottom is the eldest as it is thought to be deposited first, this should help you with some of the problems :)
NotTim

alrighty. what i said. woohoo

anonymous
  • anonymous
let me see.
anonymous
  • anonymous
so D is first?
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Yes, so D was deposited first which makes it the eldest.
anonymous
  • anonymous
1.D 2.C 3.B 4.A Correct?
anonymous
  • anonymous
How about the second and third puzzle? Do they work the same way?
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Yes, except the intrusion usually comes after the layering (thats why the pattern can still be there) - do you see what I mean from my diagram?
anonymous
  • anonymous
no not really?
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
well fair enough, its a pretty bad diagram :P i'll see if I can explain it a bit better
anonymous
  • anonymous
ok
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
okay so you see on the diagram the strata with this bit in the middle. The layers all line up with each other on each side of intrusion so this means that the layered part was there originally and something pushed into it - the intrusive layer. Hmm I don't think I'm very good at explaining this - i'll try relating it to something: If you imagine you have a pile of pancakes (our strata), then you make a cut and you can see all of the pancake-strata then you stick ice-cream in the cut you just made, so then your pancakes will still line up around the ice-cream but you stuck the ice-cream in last. You can't really make them line up if you do it in a different order. If you stuck the first pancake down, cut a hole then stuck in the ice-cream then stuck another pancake on it would just sit on top of the icecream... so from our diagram we know that the intrusive part (ice-cream) would have to be younger than the strata (our pancakes). Hope that makes sense and I hope I didn't make you hungry :P

  • anonymous
Ok so in puzzle 2 I is oldest?
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
no, I would be the youngest as it "cut" through our layers :)
anonymous
  • anonymous
Ok I'm soo confused can you give me the answer for puzzle 2
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
lol, well I won't give you the answer but i'll draw up a timeline...

ok

do you have any tips to help me with puzzle 3?
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
for puzzle 3 it looks like the crack formed and then another layer was stuck ontop of it - which would be the unconformity.
anonymous
  • anonymous
Oldest 1.a 2.b 3.c 4.d 5.e 6.f Youngest Correct?
anonymous
  • anonymous
switch b and a
anonymous
  • anonymous
Puzzle 3 Oldest 1.b 2.a 3.g 4.i 5.f 6.h 7.c 8.d 9.e Youngest Correct?
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
No, sorry.. a. (the igneous one) has to be the youngest because the rock layers had to be present before the intrusion could cut into it. The other layers are dated in the same way as the first problem. sorry - i lost internet connection
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
So oldest on puzzle 2 would be the bottom layer F
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
and unfortunately you have puzzle 3 wrong too, I suspect you are thinking of it backwards. The thing that was deposited first would be the oldest, which would be I, then the other layers on top of it, then it would have been shifted to a tilt then intruded "as the rock need to be there first for it to be intruded". Then once all that was done some other rock was deposited on the top.

Are you a teacher?
TranceNova

No :) ... you can tell because I talk about pancakes :P

Puzzle 3 Oldest f g h i d a b d e Youngest
NotTim
  • NotTim
you dont need help on ALL the questions do you?
NotTim
  • NotTim
you could use the knowledge nova gave you and infer from that.
anonymous
  • anonymous
yes i suck at rock layers
NotTim
  • NotTim
me too :{
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Sorry still not right :/ Oldest Correct grouping and time – but in the wrong order: f,g,h,i You are missing something here. d – this is correct time, if you add in the missing something correct order, but wrong time: a,b d – oops you put that in twice e – not the youngest Youngest
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
And yeah rock layers can get confusing, took me awhile to learn it
anonymous
  • anonymous
h f g i b c a d e
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Hmm still not right, try reading this while looking at the diagram. We had layer I first off, then H, G and F were placed ontop of it. Then they were tilted in event C. After a bit more time layer E formed on top of I,H,G and F. Then some igneous rock pushed its way into I,H,G,F and E layers. Then after more time layer A was deposited and became all “wavy” (it was deformed) in B

I'm stuck on this puzzle. Please can you give me the answer on this one and on puzzle 3. I'm not trying to be lazy and I don't usually have people do my work for me thats how I got on the honor roll. Please I really need to get this done I can't wait another day.
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
I'm sorry I can't just give you the straight off answer, because that would be cheating :/ but if you read through that paragraph it has the answer in it, the parts that were first are the oldest. - this paragraph is puzzle 3 We had layer I first off, then H, G and F were placed ontop of it. Then they were tilted in event C. After a bit more time layer E formed on top of I,H,G and F. Then some igneous rock pushed its way into I,H,G,F and E layers. Then after more time layer A was deposited and became all “wavy” (it was deformed) in B
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
this is puzzle 2 First off layer F was placed down then E ontop of it, then D, then C. Then an igneous rock (b) pushed its way through. Then an event occurred (a) that changed the surface.

I really don't get this. For puzzle 2 or 3. Those are the only ones I'm stuck on.
NotTim
  • NotTim
heh.
NotTim
  • NotTim
you seem like a smart kid Monica. I think you don't even need TranceNoava's help for 2 or 3.
TranceNova
  • TranceNova
Well I know what's happening :) when I get really really stuck on things I get all paniced and annoyed so stuff gets even harder to understand. So just breathe for a little bit and either look at it using what you know (like nottim says, you know the stuff you don't need me :) ) or read through those paragraphs again. The tip is stay calm :)
