let initial no. of apples be x. so after first ate, apples left = x - x/3 = t second one ate 1/3rd of what remained, so, apples left after he had eaten = t - t/3 =(x - x/3) - (x - x/3)/3 = w after the third ate, remaining apples = w-w/3 =[(x - x/3) - (x - x/3)/3] - [(x - x/3) - (x - x/3)/3]/3 simplifies to: 8x/27 so this is the number of apples left finally, which is stated that it equals '8' so, 8x/27 = 8 solve for 'x', and enjoy!! :))

just divide like you do for any two polynomials. carry on after first step, i know you are thinking this division will not be possible, but try it, its not difficult. i ll post a solution if you are still unable to do it.

ok, my mouse is screwed so I can't draw properly so I can only type out where you went wrong. so for the x^6 + 7x^3 u should really put brackets around the whole term (x^6 + 7x^3) now you can minus it. so -13x^3 - 7x^3 will be -20x^3 not 6. The next number that will be written on top next to x^3 will be -20 because x^3 goes into -20x^3 -20 times.
