## iloveboys Group Title Simplify: (3x - 5) - (4x + 6) 2 years ago 2 years ago

(3x - 5) - (4x+6) When there is negative sign out side the bracket the sign changes 3x-5 -4x-6 can you do it now?

2. jim_thompson5910

you can rearrange the terms of 3x-5 -4x-6 to get 3x-5 -4x-6 3x-4x-5 -6 Now combine 3x and -4x to get what?

3. iloveboys

-X+11?

4. iloveboys

NO NO NO... HOLD ON

5. iloveboys

X+1? Is that right or no?

Noo First one is right

7. iloveboys

oh.... lol

:)

9. iloveboys

i have a few more.. can you help??

I'll try

11. iloveboys

Simplify: (3x^2 - 2) + (2x^2 - 6x + 3)

12. iloveboys

i love harry potter

13. iloveboys

just saying.

14. jim_thompson5910

(3x - 5) - (4x+6) is really -x - 11

15. jim_thompson5910

so your first one was close

16. iloveboys

ok thk you jim!

17. jim_thompson5910

you're welcome

18. iloveboys

i though iw as wron.. lol

19. iloveboys

wrong*

20. jim_thompson5910

you were close though, just need to keep in mind that both 5 and 6 were negative

21. iloveboys

yes and i didnt even look to see.. lol i do that alot need to sop though. do you think you could help me on the other one that i posted?

22. iloveboys

its up ther somewhere ^

23. iloveboys

cuz it looks as if my help that was helping left.

24. jim_thompson5910

(3x^2 - 2) + (2x^2 - 6x + 3) 3x^2 - 2 + 2x^2 - 6x + 3 ... parenthesis are unneeded here (3x^2+2x^2)+(-6x)+(-2+3) ... group like terms 5x^2 - 6x + 1 ... combine like terms So (3x^2 - 2) + (2x^2 - 6x + 3) simplifies to 5x^2 - 6x + 1

25. iloveboys

that makes sence

26. jim_thompson5910

that's great :)

27. iloveboys

28. jim_thompson5910

sure, go for it

29. iloveboys

A sports company conducted a road test of a new model of a geared bike. The test rider cycled (3x - 2) miles on a flat road, (x2 - 5) miles uphill, and (2x + 7) miles downhill. Which simplified expression is equivalent to the total distance, in miles, for which the bike was tested?

30. iloveboys

hold on messed up..

31. jim_thompson5910

alright

32. iloveboys

(x^2-5)

33. iloveboys

sorry didnt think to put it when i was typing

34. jim_thompson5910

oh that's perfectly fine, i figured that when you typed x2, you meant x^2

35. jim_thompson5910

one sec while I type it up

36. iloveboys

thank u so much

37. jim_thompson5910

total distance = result of adding up all the distances total distance = distance1 + distance2 + distance3 total distance = (3x-2)+(x^2-5)+(2x+7) total distance = 3x-2+x^2-5+2x+7 total distance = (x^2)+(3x+2x)+(-2-5+7) total distance = x^2+5x+0 total distance = x^2+5x So the simplified expression that's equal to the total distance is x^2+5x

38. jim_thompson5910

I tried to type it in the little box, but it drives me nuts cause it keeps changing on me...so I typed it elsewhere and pasted it.

39. iloveboys

okay.. lol... check this one for me.. i think i ve it correct...

40. jim_thompson5910

alright

41. iloveboys

Simplify the following expression: (5x^2 + 3x + 4) - (2x^2 + 5x - 1). If the final answer is written in the form Ax^2 + Bx + C, what is the value of A? Answer A=3 B= -2 and c=5

42. iloveboys

or is that wrong? l

43. jim_thompson5910

you got it 100% correct, very nice job

44. iloveboys

ok now how di i answer it as the a?

45. jim_thompson5910

you just give the answer of A since that's all they're asking for

46. jim_thompson5910

well I meant A = 3

47. jim_thompson5910

or maybe they want both the final expression AND the value of A

48. iloveboys

well duh... there is a box do3 or the /hole thing?

49. jim_thompson5910

just one box?

50. iloveboys

yea

51. jim_thompson5910

so my guess is that they just want the value of A, so yes, 3

52. jim_thompson5910

I thought they also wanted the final simplified expression, but I guess not

53. iloveboys

ok ty i have on more.. just like the one above

54. jim_thompson5910

alright

55. iloveboys

siplfy the following expression: (x + 6y) - (3x - 10y). If the final answer is written in the form Ax + By, what is the value of A

56. jim_thompson5910

x - 3x is ...?

57. iloveboys

?

58. jim_thompson5910

what is 3x - x (I flipped it around, but it will guide us toward the answer)

59. iloveboys

2x?

60. jim_thompson5910

good, so because I flipped things around, the sign was flipped....so x - 3x is -2x

61. iloveboys

okay.

62. jim_thompson5910

Therefore, the value of A is -2

63. iloveboys

okay!!

64. jim_thompson5910

we only need to focus on the x terms because that's all they want to know (we can forget the y terms completely)

65. iloveboys

okay that that makes it a bit eaiser

66. jim_thompson5910

yes it does

67. iloveboys

i have about 17 questons on quadracic *equations are u busy? lol

68. jim_thompson5910

not too much, which ones are really giving you problems...we can do those first

69. iloveboys

its just questions in general from a textbook and i messed alot of school./ ima go ts t haty?

70. iloveboys

i go to a new post is that okay?

71. jim_thompson5910

sure thing, just message me that you created it, thx

72. iloveboys

wait what over ther <---

73. iloveboys

is up now. over ther sorryidk how to message on hear

74. jim_thompson5910

that's fine, thanks for letting me know
