Humans have always been curious about the nature of outer space. Besides curiosity, what other societal demands have led to exploration of space?

    oh and the ability to just say, "yeah we put a man on the moon" or the fact that we could do it.

    Also, acquisition of additional resources like minerals from the Moon I think.

    That, and if everyone were as rich as North Americans, the Earth would already be overpopulated so we need to escape to other interstellar bodies.
