Ever since I've discovered version control, I couldn't imagine living without it; all that managing different version of your project and managing colleagues' contributions to the main code was hell, and an effective VCS simply makes most of the complexity disappear. What other technologies, apart from VCS like SVN or git, are a boon to productivity?

    *nix, syslog, regular expressions, cron and at are my best tools for adminning.

    A good merge/diff utility can work wonders. When working on large projects with many developers, it's important to be able to diff changes both for debugging and to gain better understanding of code others wrote.
