What type of assignments?
First. Read your syllabus as soon as you get it and I mean the whole thing. This might seem like a no brainer (and it is), but you'd be surprised at how many students just read the part of the syllabus for the week they are in, some don't even read that part until the day before the assignment is due and a few don't read it at all. Reading the entire syllabus before the class even starts will let you know what is due and when it is due and allow you to plan your assignments in advance. Highlight or make note of assignments that seem more difficult or that might take more time.
Second. Plan your assignments, the earlier the better. A lot of student don't do this because it seems like too much work, but believe me the extra work you do planning assignments at the beginning of class pays off big when it comes time to do them. It's exponentially easier to complete an assignment when you know what you are going to do in advance. Now this is not to say that you have to plan every little detail at the beginning of class or weeks ahead of time, but get an idea of the broad aspects of each assignment:
What is the due date?
How long will it take?
Where can you find the research or information needed to complete the assignment?
Are there any special preparations or materials that you will need?
And anything else that will make getting the assignment rolling when it is time that much easier.
Third. Don't procrastinate. I know this is easier said than done. I was a bad procrastinator and know that it is a hard habit to break, but believe me, when you start doing college level work, you CANNOT start a paper or a complex assignment the day before it is due. Your grades will show it if you do.
Fourth. Break your assignments into manageable chunks that you can accomplish over the course of time and make yourself a schedule and deadlines to get those parts done. For example, when I was in college I generally had a paper due every week. So I would make a schedule that was something like this.
Monday - Research. Find and read articles pertaining to the subject. Make note of useful articles. Begin formulating ideas for the paper. Re-read noted articles and take detailed notes of material that I can incorporate into the paper.
Tuesday - More thorough research and outlining. Start thinking about my thesis statement and come up with at least three points I wish to discuss in the paper. From these points develop a basic outline. Use the detailed notes I took to support the points. If I come up with more than three points eliminate the weaker ones until there are three.
Wednesday - Free writing and outline refinement. Without referring to your outline, free write for at least twenty minutes on your subject using only what you remember from your research. Compare what you have written with your outline and pull the useful bits from the writing and put them into the logical place in the outline.
And so on. Breaking up the assignment in this manner makes it much easier to swallow and get things done. These are some of the things that I did in college that made my life easier and allowed me to graduate summa cum laude.
