yes I am aware of the format of an essay. I am asking for tips specifically regarding college admission essays in America. Someone told me they do not like it when you write down statistics about their college. Is that true? for example" According to ABC, U of M Ann Arbor is the 9th best pharmacy school in America" DISCLAIMER-I JUST MADE THIS STATISTIC UP!!!

Number one rule: If there is an upper limit on the word count DO NOT go over it and if there is no upper limit on the word count make the essay as concise as possible. A lot of people screw this up. They think longer is better. That it somehow show they are smart or know more, but it really doesn't and it will only reflect badly on you if you state more than is necessary. Keep in mind those who are judging your essay likely have thousands to read. If you make them slog through a long paper they are going to mark you unfavorably.
Also give them your best writing. Proofread your essay over and over and be sure zero errors get through. Better yet have others read your essay. Objective eyes are quicker to find errors. Even one error could mean someone else getting in instead of you.
In addition, as long as you have people proofreading it for errors, have them critique it for you as well. Ask them if it is interesting and if it held their attention. If if didn't find out where they got bored and fix it or take it out. The more interesting your paper, the more memorable you will be and the higher you will advance in the judging process.
These are the main things I can think of.
